Air Purifier Efficacy for Allergy & Asthma Sufferers: Does Air Filtration Really Make a Difference?

There are few people who do not suffer from allergies or know someone who does. According to a report released by the CDC in January 2023 (1), more than 25% of Americans have at least one allergy. With the US population well above 300 million people, there are a lot of allergy sufferers. And since most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, people with allergies experience them inside, where allergens can become concentrated and create health problems.

Thankfully, indoor air purification and the benefits that air purifiers provide can help reduce allergy symptoms by removing particulate matter that triggers allergic reactions.

But First, a Word About Allergies

Simply defined, an allergy is an exaggerated immune system response to substances (allergens) that are considered otherwise harmless to the average person.

Allergens can be something we ingest, such as food or medicine, or something we touch, like latex or a poison ivy plant. Outdoor allergens, such as pollen and ragweed, can also trigger discomfort. But most of the allergens that plague suffers originate indoors – substances like animal dander, dust, molds, and tobacco smoke – and, if not eliminated, will stress the health and welfare of those with allergies.

Some allergic reactions caused by a hypersensitive immune system may be mild in nature, such as a rash, rhinitis, or sinusitis. But others, such as asthma and anaphylaxis, can be dangerous if not controlled. Air purifiers for allergies and asthma can play a significant role in managing these respiratory conditions and promoting a healthier living environment.

Air Purifier Efficacy: How Can Air Purification Help?

Air cleaning units (also called air purifiers and air filtration units) with the capacity to purify the air of a medium to large-sized classroom, bedroom, office space, or healthcare waiting room do so by removing airborne contaminants.

The process begins with capture, where polluted air is collected into the unit and pushed through internal filters that demonstrate high air purifier efficacy in removing dirt, allergens, and other particulates. The now-clean air recirculates by a fan. This filtration process repeats continually, keeping the room allergy-free with pure, fresh air.

Does Air Filtration Work to Improve Allergies?

In a word, yes. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), if your allergies or asthma are caused by indoor pollutants, air filtration can help relieve your symptoms. (2)

In fact, the National Library of Medicine at NIH (National Institutes of Health) published a 2015 article (3) recommending air filtration as a key component of environmental control. The article also said that air filtration improved health by reducing exposure to indoor contaminants and included numerous studies to support its claim.

Choosing an Air Purifier for Allergies and Asthma:

The air purifier benefits provided by the best air purification products on the market today should, at a minimum, use a multilayer filter system composed of a prefilter, a carbon filter, an antibacterial filter, and a HEPA filter. Some, like our Extract-All® AMB1 (4) air cleaner, offer seven stages of air purification, capturing the broadest range of airborne contaminants. Our AMB1 unit also includes a built-in humidifier, air quality sensor, and easy-to-use control panel.

At Air Impurities Removal Systems, Inc., we provide the highest level of service combined with our stellar air filtration products. For more information, contact us for a free estimate with one of our clean air experts.
